Midland City Council and MISD Collaborate on Infrastructure to Support New High Schools

Joint Effort Aims to Enhance Roadways for Upcoming Educational Facilities

In a decisive move to address the infrastructure demands of Midland's expanding educational landscape, the Midland City Council has approved a capital improvement development agreement with the Midland Independent School District (MISD).

This partnership allocates approximately $27.5 million for significant roadway enhancements, focusing on Avalon Drive, Thomason Drive, and Wadley Avenue.

The initiative is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in rapidly growing areas and ensure safe access to the new high schools under construction.

Under the agreement, the city will contribute around $18.2 million, with MISD covering the remaining costs.

These improvements are crucial for the upcoming Legacy High School and Midland High School campuses, both scheduled to open in August 2028.

The new Legacy High School, located near Scharbauer Sports Complex, and the new Midland High School, situated at the former Ranchland Hills Golf Club site, are part of the 2023 school bond initiative.

Each campus is designed to accommodate between 3,800 and 4,200 students, reflecting the community's commitment to enhancing educational facilities.

During council discussions, some members expressed concerns about the financial implications of the city's involvement in funding infrastructure traditionally covered by school bond packages.

Critics worry about setting a precedent that could lead to increased tax burdens on Midland residents.

Despite these concerns, the council recognized the urgent need for improved roadways to ensure student safety and voted 4-3 in favor of the project.

As Midland continues to experience rapid growth, this collaborative effort between the city and MISD underscores a shared commitment to providing safe and efficient access to educational facilities.

Officials are now tasked with developing a comprehensive funding plan to manage the project's financial aspects effectively.

This decision reflects a balance between addressing immediate public safety needs and maintaining long-term fiscal responsibility.
